Learning Style Is Essential For Success in 2022

Have you already begun thinking about the plans and goals you want to achieve for next year? Have you been strategic in preparing yourself ahead of time to ensure your success?

Awesome, I’m sure you’ve even invested in learning the latest skills to become an expert as well! Have you considered evaluating your learning techniques? While most of us are shifting our minds to the new year I love to share a recent experience that helped me end this year on a high note!

I recently had a conversation with my manager about understanding the details, structure, and big picture for a project. I didn’t expect her to ask about my learning style. Once she understood I was more of a visual learner, my understanding of the overall project became clearer.

After taking the time to review the campaign the details, structure, and big picture were reframed to help me develop my visuals for the campaign. The conversation reminded me how essential learning styles are when it comes to receiving new information, especially when you first start at a new company.

There are 7 learning styles - visual, auditory, verbal, kinesthetic, logical, social, and solidarity, according to an article from Literary Planet. Most of the learning styles are usually uncovered in school during certain activities or group projects.

Sometimes you might forget about your learning style and pressure yourself to adapt to the status quo of a new environment. I recognized that while the goal is to meet the company standards for most entry-level employees, especially interns, you must carve your own time to process what you’re doing.

This is just as important when asking questions for clarification. Though it can be a bit awkward for some, consider scheduling a meeting to get clarification on the details at work from your manager, peer mentor, or team buddy. Seriously, if you feel as though next year you would like to improve the quality of your work, set up a time this week if your office is still open.

Showing your thought process and what you have completed, allows them to understand what you do understand. Your boss will most likely be able to recognize where exactly to help you grasp the other aspects of the project. During this conversion also mention your learning style as a strength you would like to utilize moving forward to assist your team.

Start 2022 by leaning into your learning style and using it to highlight your strengths. Demonstrate how this will help your team in other areas the client may have mentioned. This way you can start the new year off winning!
